Hazrat Jalal Al-Din Rumi — Şeb-i Arus — Celebrating Union
Join us for a joyful celebration of Şeb-i Arus, featuring a talk by international Rumi expert Ayşe Akyürek and storytelling from Rumi’s Mathnawi with celebrated storyteller Jumana Moon, plus an exclusive music performance!
Şeb-i Arus is the anniversary of the passing of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi. Literally meaning ‘wedding night’, it describes the moment he was reunited with the Beloved. We are honoured to bring together lovers of Rumi’s Sufi teachings to celebrate this special night.
Death in Mevlana’s Thought
Ayşe Akyürek is a French-Turkish researcher in religious studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, specializing in Turkish Sufi orders, particularly the Mevleviye, the renowned order of the Whirling Dervishes. For this special Shab-e-Arus event, Akyürek will discuss death in Mevlana’s thought, revealing his poetic depiction of the return to the source, reuniting with the Divine through earthly death.
The Reed-Flute’s Song
Jumana Moon began telling stories in public in 2008 and since then has researched, collected, and shared hundreds of traditional stories, particularly from the Islamic tradition, in schools, museums, madrasas, festivals, forests, gardens & events both nationally & internationally. ‘The Reed-Flute’s Song’ is a layered and textured selection of stories from Rumi’s Mathnawi, charting the pathways and chambers of the soul as only Mawlana Rumi can do.
With exclusive musical accompaniment (TBC), this FREE event promises to be unforgettable!
